About Us

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County was formed in 1998 by a small group of concerned citizens in an effort to start a movement to create a fire safe Nevada County.  Over the past six years the organization has grown into what it is today.

The purpose of the Fire Safe Council is to work toward reducing the risk of life and property loss from wildfire.  This is done through applying for grant money and donations to pay for fuel reduction and public education projects; and to increase public awareness of the potential for fire loss and what people can do to reduce the probability of a devastating wildfire.

The Fire Safe Council operates with a staff of three and a Board of Directors consisting of 15 residents representing various parties, with a vested interest in fire prevention.  We were the first Fire Safe Council in the State to have a full time paid staff.

Our Vision is:A county where we are prepared for a catastrophic fire.  We will have homes that have defensible space, adequate access and evacuation routes identified, response plans that citizens and responders know, fuel breaks at strategic points, and communication among agencies.

The outcome will be that most of us will keep our homes, we will look around and see the damage, but not the blackened devastation that catastrophic fires create.  Our community will still attract visitors and pride, and no one will die while escaping with their loved ones.

These are important goals and real concerns that will take a cooperative effort with many people and players to convert this vision into reality.”

Our Mission Is:  “To provide education and programs for fire prevention and preparedness to all the citizens of Nevada County in order to reduce the loss of lives, personal property, and natural resources from wildfire.”

The Smokey was awarded to FIRE SAFE COUNCIL OF NEVADA COUNTY for outstanding public service in wildfire prevention by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service National Association of State Foresters and The Advertising Council, Inc. in 2001.
